From November 22 to Novembre 24, 2024, Research Camping – curated by Lavanderia a Vapore and Workspace Ricerca X – returns for its third edition, transforming the spaces of Lavanderia a Vapore, from the foyer to the theater, into hybrid environments between fiction and reality, which become devices for the exchange and dissemination of artistic research processes.
In a world in transition that seeks new reading tools and answers, artistic research can offer fertile ground for imagining new, possible or forgotten ways of making the world.
RESEARCH CAMPING 2024 – Floating Bodies.
These are the questions that inspire the 2024 edition of Research Camping – Floating Bodies:
How to navigate the unknown and transformation through art practices? How to learn from water the possibility of being rocked into new mixes? How to get in touch with an underwater world?
We live in a time of continuous transformation in which every fixed point and solid postures prove ineffective, facade calcifications: in a flow toward new configurations we are guided by the aquatic principle. Amniotic fluids, gestational waters, circulation of fluids are bearers of life, movement and increasingly swirling encounters with others and otherness. Can we find in water a biopolitical dimension, from which we can learn to redefine time, space and the blurred boundaries of encounters and intermingling?
The bay is the dimension evoked by this third edition centered on the fluidity of bodies, made of flesh and water, increasingly viscous and elusive, bodies that inhabit a landscape in which they coexist between land and liquidity, in a time in which certainty and illusion are confused.
Intimate spaces crowd into the bay, such as the Showers in which aquatics infiltrate small spaces, and wide horizons open up with the sea in which one can stand in the Shoreline, middle ground, or decide to enter the Seabed, a cool cavern where darkness and night welcome hidden creatures.
These environments will be activated by the sharing of research practices and materials, open
to the temporary community of artist-researchers, participants and visitors.
In research, it is not enough to just look, we need to immerse ourselves and touch by making collective experiences that remind us of other possibilities for the future.
During the Camping, research, from being an intimate space behind closed doors, becomes an imaginative plaza for new politics, a middle ground that welcomes creations still in formation, and offers asylum to alternative thoughts and imaginaries to the muscular rhetoric and busy time of efficiency and production.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We invite artists/researchers to send articulated proposals from their own research path, resonating with the question how to navigate the unknown and transformation through artistic practices, and the theme illustrated in the Camping description.
Proposal formats can be:
- research practices, understood as proposals to be shared with a group of people that may include practitioners and observers
- multimodal research materials, understood as building blocks of the research process (sounds, words, images, texts, objects,…), to be organized in space to be traversed by participants
Proposals can be placed in any of the Camping spaces:
- the Showers: practices, materials, performative or installation devices aimed at small groups or individuals.
In the showers, intimacy is shared, in a space that oscillates between individual and public dimensions, where water flows in small drops. - the Shoreline: collective proposals, for small or large groups.
An intermediate space, standing between one thing and another, a wet, horizontal zone animated by tides and fluctuation. The Bagnasciuga invites to a lying and soft dimension of unbalancing, waiting, contemplation. - the Seabed: collective proposals, for small or large groups, connected to the dimension of the current, the underwater and hidden worlds.
An abyssal and nocturnal space, crowded with unknown things and forces, a place of mystery and other codes where even time and temperature change.
Proposals for Shoreline and Seabed should have a maximum duration of 30 minutes, while proposals for Showers may vary in duration.
All proposals should be compatible with the rotation and co-habitation of other proposals: sharing space and time is a curatorial and organizational principle of Camping, understood as a collective and shared experience.
