For the Los Faunos project, the Lavanderia a Vapore is experimenting with a transnational working model by inviting the Catalan choreographer and artist Quim Bigas Bassart to work with Nest, the network of Turin production companies, with the involvement of teachers from local dance schools: in a dynamic that combines expansion of the artistic imaginary and aesthetics of reference and territorial rootedness, it was decided to entrust an international artist with the proposal of an inspirational vision starting from the figure of the Faun and the declination of the same in the repertoire, accompanied by creative tasks and choreographic scores that can activate in dance schools, teachers and participants, a compositional and expressive capacity that goes beyond the disciplinary teachings oriented towards perfect interpretation.

The appointment is part of Fuoco Fauno, a special project realised in a network by Gender Bender, Fondazione Piemonte dal Vivo / Lavanderia a Vapore, Teatro Stabile dell’Umbria that explores and re-enacts the figure of the FAUNO in dance, starting from its first appearance in 1912 with Vaclav Nižinskij’s Après-midi d’un faune. Today, the Faun is still an inexhaustible reservoir of imagery for questioning our present: from questions of identity and gender to the relationship between human and animal, from the relationship with nature and the environment – which we are urgently called upon to renegotiate – to the possible exchange between classical repertoire and experimentation with new artistic languages.

On Sunday 13 October at 4 p.m. Los Faunos will be presented at the Giardini Reali in Turin as part of the opening event of Torino Design City, a project of the City of Turin with the contribution of the Ministry of Tourism, as part of the projects ‘Residenze Sabaude. Un territorio da RE’ and ’Torino. Dire Fare Vedere Design. A UNESCO Creative City’ funded by the Ministry of Tourism.

An afternoon dedicated to the sensitive and imaginative themes evoked by the element water. An immersion between dance, sound and short video dance to reflect together: precious water to be sipped, water to be protected. Because when we look at water, we look at the whole of humanity.

Similar to a musical choir, a poetic choir is a means of unlocking the song that is in the word; a set of voices that tune in to bring to other ears, minds and hearts, the extraordinary music of the meaning-bearing word: poetry. Unlike a canonical choir, however, the poetry choir is a speaking choir. In this workshop, words, voice, gestures and rhythm will be given to a collective poetic text that will becomè shared and public action that evening.

Seeing someone deviating from the norm suggests a possible hijacking in those who follow the norm. This must not happen, otherwise a social system based on the exploitation of bodies cannot be maintained. For this reason, it can thus be asserted that in modern societies we no longer need a controlling system, but it is we, ourselves, who self-regulate our own and other bodies. But just as bodies are mutable and intersectional, so are spaces. According to the words of Sandra Cane, space is neutral, it is the presence of ‘normed’ bodies that makes a specific space a place of power.

Can the public bathroom – both the place of historical queer sociability and at the same time of binary politics enforcement – serve as an excuse to interrogate the power dynamics that permit or prevent us to take a position with respect to unwritten rules? Why do some bodies feel they are in the right place compared to others and therefore entitled to tell others what to do? Can we intercept these dynamics and get together to create a little short circuit? 

Supported and co-financed by the European Union, On Mobilisation is an international cooperation project uniting a network of 3 partners and 6 artists. From April 2023 and over a period of 3 years, wpZimmer (as lead partner), Baltic Art Centre, Studio ALTA, Lavanderia a Vapore, ARIA and GRASS – together with Kalle Brolin, Elisabetta Consonni, Daniele Ninarello, Ahilan Ratnamohan, Marika Smreková and Danae Theodoridou – will explore the theme of ethical, poetic and political mobilisation through artistic practices and collective works. A softly guided journey that will attempt, in a peer-to-peer dynamic, to contribute to the ongoing social demand for equality, equity and empowerment.

The International Symposium is a moment of convergence of visions and experiences related to the theme of mobilisation and protest: how can we make revolution irresistible? How can awakening our desires and dreams subvert the status quo and originate a different present?

The Symposium encompasses different formats, talks, workshops and experiences, offering itself as a training ground for generating change through artistic practices that, in their exceptionality, are interferences in the political scenario and generators of change. Over the course of the three days, a short dramaturgical curve unfolds, which, from the awakening and re-emergence of the body from the dynamics of control and anaesthesia, moves us to the discovery of the dream as an apparently unproductive zone generating new visions that sweep away the imagination’s monopoly of the present paradigm as the only possible world. Valuing the radical imagination and its tactics helps us to formulate desires for change, making us rediscover the collective dimension of action capable of giving substance to the visions that emerge.

Opening a small space-time gap celebrates slowing down as a form of resistance against the rhythms of a system of production and consumption that wants more and more and ever faster.
Slowing down is a physical and mental act and at the same time a political action of caring. In slowing down, clearings open up in which one is allowed to become enchanted in the observation of details. Waiting for nothing allows experimentation with effort subtraction: what is the minimum amount of energy I can use to make a movement?

Pleasure Body is a space for theoretical/perceptual/somatic investigation of pleasure. It offers itself as a space for facilitating practices and conversations related to pleasure and rest.

Pleasure Body has a maximum capacity of 20 people, no familiarity or professional knowledge of dance and movement languages are required to participate. The workshop is in Italian, some of the practices may include the reading of texts in English. LIS translation is not provided.

Giorgia Ohanesian Nardin is an Italian artist of Armenian descent who practices in the contexts of dance and live performance. Trained in dance, her work manifests in movement, video, text, choreography, sound, gatherings and deals with the relationship between dance, divination and writing; with geography and the opposite of belonging; with fetish for language, its politics and its many frictions. Since 2018 she has regularly held Pleasure Body, a space to facilitate practices and conversations related to pleasure and rest.

La Boutique is a small shop where people can borrow clothes for free to participate in the Dance Gala as completely new characters. We can choose who we have always wanted to be or we can simply shed what we have become. We thus draw to the conclusion of Spring Rolls, finding in multiplicity and transformation new and new us.

International Dance Day, established by the UNESCO International Dance Council in 1982, is celebrated worldwide on 29 April to promote dance as a universal discipline and art form that unites people across borders and differences. On this day, numerous events and manifestations take place to highlight the diversity of dance. Dialogues, collaborations and projects to promote shared dance are the central theme that characterises the activities on this special day.

Through gesture, sensuality, touch and relationality, Baczynski-Jenkins’ practice unfolds structures and politics of desire. Relationality is present in the dialogical ways in which the work is developed and performed as well as in the materials and poetics it invokes. This includes tracing relations between sensation and sociality, embodied expression and alienation, the textures of everyday experience, the utopian and latent queer histories.

HIGH VOICE READINGS with Isterika Istorika

The texts are fragments of novels, short stories and essays that over time have formed the imaginary worlds, characters, architectures and creatures of the reading group Isterika’s encounters. They tell of bodies, of encounters between creatures, of bodily exchanges and contaminations that take place in other, sci-fi and impossible realities. Knowledge comes through experience. And experience, in turn, is formed through reading stories in an intimate and direct encounter.

OLOBIONTE – Performance installation curated by Lorenzo Peluffo and Enrico Turletti

Olobionte is an installation that involves humans, plants and computers in the process of music creation. The collaboration between these three beings is made possible by a system that monitors the behaviour of humans and plants by means of sensors for body diagnostics and sensors for environmental monitoring. The data produced by these devices are analysed and processed by algorithms and neural networks to generate music in real time, establishing the timbres and structure of the composition based on the different behaviours observed. Olobionte presents a reflection on the inclusion of non-human beings within human society, a topic that raises questions about how we view and represent them within our institutions and organisations. By involving humans and non-humans within an artistic process such as music through the mediation of technology, Olobionte proposes an experience in which we can enjoy a way of living based on alliance and the altruistic rediscovery of relationships.
